Questions

About Autechre's gear.

What software does Autechre use?

Sean Booth told Sound On Sound in 2004 that Max/MSP was head-exploding when they first got it, and named Digital Performer, Logic and Cubase on their PowerBook. In Remix in 2008 he said they edited Quaristice in Digital Performer. In 2016 he told RA: "I just use MaxMSP now."

What synths does Autechre use?

They have named a Roland MC-202 and SH-2, Korg MS-10 and MS-20, a Yamaha FS1R and DX100, a Nord Lead they used all the time (Sound On Sound, 2004), and a Nord Modular G2 and Nord Rack on Quaristice (Remix, 2008).

What drum machines does Autechre use?

Booth told Sound On Sound that early on they used a Roland R-8 and a TR-606 to trigger a sampler. For Quaristice they named an Elektron Machinedrum, and Booth said he likes an Oberheim DMX or LinnDrum against warm analog sounds.

What samplers did Autechre use?

Sound On Sound listed their Ensoniq EPS, Kurzweil K2500 and Casio FZ-1 and SK-1 samplers in 2004, and Booth said modding the Casios was brilliant fun. Remix named an Akai MPC1000 in their 2008 touring rig.

What effects does Autechre use?

Booth told Remix in 2008 that they mod old Boss rack effects like the RSD-10 and RDD-10, and called the Alesis QuadraVerb a sick device. Their Quaristice rig also had Lexicon PCM 80 and PCM 90 units.

About this guide · Last checked

Autechre are Sean Booth and Rob Brown, the Rochdale duo behind Incunabula, Amber, Tri Repetae, Confield and the NTS Sessions on Warp. They rarely list their gear, so this guide sticks to what they told Sound On Sound in 2004 and Remix magazine in 2008: the software, synths, samplers, drum machines and rack effects they named.

truerecs put this guide together from public videos, interviews and posts. Each item says how we know and links to the source. Autechre didn't write it or choose anything on it. How we source gear guides.
