What gear does Crystal Castles use?
Crystal Castles almost never named their synths or pedals in interviews. Ethan Kath has said he circuit bent a garage sale Atari and recorded parts of III on a 1948 British tape recorder. On the taste side, Kath was introduced to rock by The Stooges' Fun House, and Alice Glass named Céline's Journey to the End of the Night.

About Crystal Castles's gear.
Did Crystal Castles use an Atari chip?
Ethan Kath told Gigwise in 2008 that he read about circuit bending and tried it on an Atari he bought at a garage sale for a few dollars. The popular story of an Atari 5200 chip wired into a keyboard was disputed by the band in Spin the same year.
What did Crystal Castles record III on?
Kath told SLUG Magazine he recorded some stems on a 1948 British tape recorder that had not been plugged in for 15 years, and said the keyboards and pedals from the first two albums were traded for new ones.
What record got Ethan Kath into rock music?
NME reported in 2013 that an uncle introduced Kath to rock and roll with Fun House by The Stooges, after a childhood spent as a huge Prince fan.
What book has Alice Glass named?
In a 2012 Spin interview, Alice Glass named Louis-Ferdinand Céline's Journey to the End of the Night first when asked what she personally likes, alongside Albert Camus, Sylvia Plath and John Waters.
Crystal Castles formed in Toronto around producer Ethan Kath, with Alice Glass on vocals from 2006 to 2014. Kath built the sound from cheap, broken and old machines: he told Gigwise in 2008 that he circuit bent an Atari bought at a garage sale, and he recorded stems for III on a 1948 British tape recorder. The band rarely named models, so this guide sticks to what they did name: the records and books that shaped them.
